May 26th, 2013 (9-10pm): Avast! This week on A Word In Hedgesmedgewise guest host and reader Tenali will heave-away and set sail to the esoteric side of pirate lore and legend – featuring excerpts from The Devil’s Anarchy by Stephen Snelders and Pirate Utopias by Peter Lamborn Wilson. Snelders’ book examines rare 17th century Dutch pirate histories to show the shared continuity of pirate culture, its modes of organization, methods of distributing booty and resolving disputes, and tendencies for high living. Wilson’s book delves into the 16-19th Moslem Corsairs from the Barbary Coast who ravaged European shipping. During this period, however, thousands of Europeans also converted to Islam and joined the pirate “holy war”. Were these men (and women) the scum of the seas, apostates, traitors – “Renegadoes”? Or did they abandon and betray Christendom as a praxis of social resistance?
